An air gap in plumbing is a physical, unobstructed vertical space between a water outlet and the flood-level rim of a receiving fixture. This open space prevents contaminated water from being siphoned backward into the potable water supply through backflow. Air gaps are the simplest and most reliable form of backflow prevention recognized by plumbing codes worldwide.
Physics of Backflow Prevention: How the Separation Works
The air gap works on a fundamental principle of physics: water cannot flow upward across an open space without external pressure. By maintaining a vertical separation between the end of a supply pipe and the overflow point of a sink, tub, or other fixture, the air gap ensures that even under negative pressure conditions, contaminated water cannot reach the clean supply line.
Plumbing codes typically require the air gap to be at least twice the diameter of the supply pipe, with a minimum of one inch. For example, a faucet with a half-inch supply line must maintain at least a one-inch gap between the spout opening and the fixture’s flood-level rim. This measurement is taken vertically from the lowest point of the water outlet to the top edge of the receiving vessel.
