A condensate pump is a small electric pump that collects and removes condensation water produced by HVAC systems, high-efficiency furnaces, condensing water heaters, and dehumidifiers when gravity drainage to a floor drain or exterior outlet is not available. The pump sits in a collection reservoir, activates automatically when the water level rises to a set point, and discharges the condensate through small-diameter tubing to an approved drain location.

Float Switch Activation, Reservoir Overflow & Safety Shutoff

High-efficiency gas appliances and air conditioning systems produce significant volumes of condensate water as a byproduct of their operation. A condensing tankless water heater can generate 0.5 to 1 gallon of acidic condensate per hour of operation. A central air conditioning system in a warm climate may produce 5 to 20 gallons of condensate per day during peak cooling season. This water must be routed to an appropriate drain point.

When the appliance is located above or near a floor drain, gravity carries the condensate away without mechanical assistance. But when the appliance sits below the nearest drain point or when no gravity path exists, a condensate pump provides the mechanical lift needed to move water upward and across to the drain. The pump’s reservoir collects condensate from the appliance’s drain line, and a float switch activates the pump when the reservoir reaches capacity.

Condensate pump failure is a common source of water damage in residential buildings. When the pump fails or the float switch sticks, the reservoir overflows and water spills onto floors, into ceilings, or behind walls. Many modern HVAC systems include a safety switch that shuts down the appliance if the condensate pump reservoir overflows, preventing water damage but disabling the heating or cooling system until the pump is repaired.

Mini, Reservoir-Style, Neutralizer & Ceiling Cassette Pump Types

Mini condensate pumps mount directly on or inside the HVAC air handler. They are compact units designed for attic, closet, and ceiling-plenum installations where space is limited.

Reservoir-style condensate pumps sit on the floor or shelf beneath the appliance. They include a visible tank that collects condensate before pumping. These are the most common type for water heaters and basement HVAC units.

Neutralizer condensate pumps combine a condensate pump with an acid-neutralizing media chamber. Condensate from high-efficiency gas appliances has a pH of 2.9 to 4.0, which can corrode drain pipes. The neutralizer raises the pH to acceptable levels before discharge.

Ceiling cassette pumps are designed for ductless mini-split air conditioning systems and mount inside the indoor unit’s housing.

Water Heater Installation, Condensate Routing & Inspection Services

Bonded Plumbworks’ water heater services include condensate pump installation when condensing tankless or tank-style water heaters are placed in locations without gravity drainage. Condensate line routing and pump installation are also part of the plumbing scope during plumbing inspections, where technicians verify that condensate is being discharged to an approved location and that pumps are operational.

In climates where air conditioning runs most of the year, condensate management is a persistent plumbing concern. Clogged condensate drain lines are among the most frequent service calls Bonded Plumbworks receives.

Approved Discharge Points, Acid Neutralization & UL 1995 Certification

The State building codes require condensate from fuel-burning appliances to be routed to approved drain points. Acidic condensate from high-efficiency gas appliances must be neutralized before discharge into cast iron or copper drain piping. UL 1995 governs the safety certification of HVAC condensate pumps.

Little Giant VCMA, Diversitech IQP & Rectorseal Aspen Series

Little Giant produces the VCMA series, the most widely installed residential condensate pump line. Diversitech offers the IQP series with built-in overflow alarms. Rectorseal manufactures the Aspen line of mini pumps for ductless systems. Hartell provides the KT and LTA series for commercial applications.
