Fuel gas is any combustible gas used as an energy source for residential and commercial appliances, with natural gas and propane being the two primary types distributed to homes in the United States. Fuel gas piping, appliance connection, and leak repair fall under plumbing and gasfitting licensure in most jurisdictions, making gas work one of the highest-stakes specialties in the plumbing trade.
Service Pressure, Regulator Function & Distribution Manifold Design
Fuel gas enters a home through a service line from the utility main or from a propane storage tank on the property. A regulator at the meter or tank reduces supply pressure to the standard 7 inches of water column used by most residential appliances. From the regulator, a distribution manifold feeds individual branch lines to each gas appliance through the building.
Natural gas and propane are not interchangeable despite serving the same purpose. Natural gas operates at lower pressure and has a lower BTU content per cubic foot than propane, so appliances must be configured with the correct orifice size and regulator setting for each fuel type. Installing a natural gas appliance on propane without proper conversion causes dangerous overfire that can crack heat exchangers and produce lethal carbon monoxide concentrations.
Even a slow fuel gas leak accumulates explosive concentrations in enclosed spaces over time. Natural gas reaches its explosive range at just 5 to 15 percent concentration in air. A leak that seems minor can fill a wall cavity, crawl space, or cabinet to ignition concentration within hours. Black iron pipe is the traditional material for interior gas distribution, offering proven reliability and universal code acceptance. Threaded connections sealed with yellow gas-rated thread sealant or pipe dope provide durable joints.
CSST (corrugated stainless steel tubing) is a flexible gas piping system that routes through wall cavities faster than rigid pipe.
