A garbage disposal unit is an electrically powered device installed beneath a kitchen sink that grinds food waste into fine particles small enough to pass through the building’s drain plumbing to the municipal sewer system or septic tank. The disposal mounts to the sink drain opening, replacing the standard sink strainer, and connects to the dishwasher drain line and the sink’s P-trap on the discharge side.

Flywheel Grinding, Motor Ratings & Dishwasher Drain Connection

Despite common misconception, garbage disposals do not use sharp blades to cut food. The unit contains a spinning grinding plate (flywheel) with impeller arms that fling food waste against a stationary grind ring surrounding the chamber. The centrifugal force and the textured grind ring break food into particles smaller than 2 millimeters, which then wash through openings in the grind ring and into the drain pipe with running water.

Garbage disposals are powered by an electric motor rated between one-third horsepower (HP) for basic models and one full HP for premium units. Higher horsepower ratings provide faster grinding, the ability to handle tougher food waste, and reduced likelihood of jamming. Most residential models operate on a standard 120-volt, 15-amp circuit, either hardwired or connected via a grounded plug to an outlet under the sink.

The disposal’s connection to the kitchen drain system requires proper sizing. The discharge connects to a 1.5-inch tailpiece, which enters the P-trap and then joins the kitchen branch drain. If a dishwasher is present, its drain hose connects to a dedicated inlet on the disposal body, and the internal knockout plug must be removed during installation to allow flow.

Continuous-Feed, Batch-Feed, Compact, Premium & Septic-Assist Types

Continuous-feed disposals operate while water runs and food waste is added through the open drain opening. A wall switch or air switch activates the motor. These are the most common residential type.

Batch-feed disposals activate only when a magnetic stopper is inserted and turned in the drain opening. They cannot operate while the opening is uncovered, providing an additional safety measure for households with children.

Compact disposals use smaller motors (one-third to one-half HP) and are designed for light food waste in secondary kitchens, wet bars, or small apartments.

Premium disposals use one HP motors with multi-stage grinding, sound insulation, and stainless steel grind components that resist corrosion. These handle fibrous foods, small bones, and fruit pits that would jam lower-powered models.

Septic-assist disposals include a cartridge that injects enzyme-producing microorganisms into the ground waste, helping break down material in the septic tank. These are recommended for homes on septic systems.

How Garbage Disposal Unit Relates to Plumbing Services

Garbage disposal installation and replacement is a dedicated service within Bonded Plumbworks’ garbage disposal services. Installation involves mounting the disposal to the sink flange, connecting the dishwasher drain line, adjusting the P-trap connection, and verifying the electrical supply. When replacing an existing unit, existing plumbing connections often need modification if the new disposal has a different body height or discharge position.

Common garbage disposal repairs include clearing jams caused by foreign objects, replacing worn grind components, resolving leaks at the sink flange or discharge connection, and resetting tripped overload switches. Bonded Plumbworks also addresses disposal-related kitchen drain problems when ground food waste accumulates in the P-trap or branch drain line.

UL 430, State Code Air Gap & NSF Food-Contact Certification Standards

UL 430 governs the electrical safety of waste disposers. The State building codes require an air gap or high loop on the dishwasher drain connection to the disposal. Garbage disposals must connect to approved drainage systems and cannot discharge to storm drains. NSF/ANSI certification verifies that the unit’s materials are safe for food contact.

InSinkErator Evolution, Waste King Legend & Moen GX Series Products

InSinkErator dominates the market with the Evolution series (Excel, Compact, Essential) and the Badger value line. Waste King offers the Legend and Patriot series. Moen produces the GX and GXS series for residential use. KitchenAid provides premium disposals with multi-stage grinding.
