A plumbing fixture is any exchangeable device connected to a plumbing system that delivers water, receives wastewater, or both, serving as the point of use where occupants interact directly with the building’s water supply and drainage systems. Common plumbing fixtures include sinks, toilets, bathtubs, showers, faucets, and drinking fountains. Each fixture is assigned a drainage fixture unit (DFU) value that determines the size of the drain and vent piping required to serve it.
Drainage Fixture Units, WSFU & Pipe Sizing Calculations
Plumbing fixtures are the visible, user-facing components of a building’s plumbing system. While pipes, valves, and fittings are largely hidden within walls, floors, and ceilings, fixtures are exposed elements that occupants touch, operate, and maintain. The quality, condition, and efficiency of plumbing fixtures directly affect daily comfort, water consumption, and the aesthetic value of kitchens and bathrooms.
From a code perspective, plumbing fixtures are classified by their function and assigned standardized DFU values. These values represent the probable peak drainage demand from each fixture and form the basis for sizing every drain, vent, and sewer pipe in the building. A lavatory sink contributes 1 DFU, a kitchen sink contributes 2, a bathtub contributes 2, and a toilet contributes 4. The total fixture units on any branch or main line determine the minimum pipe diameter per code tables.
Fixtures also have supply-side requirements measured in water supply fixture units (WSFU), which determine the sizing of hot and cold water distribution pipes. The building’s total WSFU count, combined with the available street pressure and the elevation difference between the water main and the highest fixture, determines whether the supply system can deliver adequate pressure and flow to all fixtures simultaneously.
Water-Closets, Lavatories, Bathing, Drinking & Service Fixture Types
Water-closet fixtures (toilets) are the most regulated plumbing fixture type, with specific requirements for flush volume, trapway size, and waste transport. These contribute the highest DFU value per fixture.
Lavatory fixtures (sinks) include bathroom lavatories, kitchen sinks, utility sinks, and mop sinks. Each type has different size, faucet, and drainage requirements.
Bathing fixtures include bathtubs, shower stalls, and combination tub-showers. These require anti-scald protection, proper waterproofing, and adequate drainage capacity.
Drinking water fixtures include water coolers and drinking fountains. These connect to the supply system only (no drain trap is required on models with a waste opening connected directly to the drain system).
Service fixtures include utility sinks, laundry sinks, and floor drains that serve maintenance and utility functions rather than personal hygiene.
Specialty fixtures include bidets, urinals, and emergency eyewash stations, each with specific code requirements.
Installation, DFU Load Calculation & Fixture Replacement Services
Plumbing fixture installation, repair, and replacement is a central part of Bonded Plumbworks’ service offerings across multiple categories. Faucet and fixture services covers faucets, sinks, and general fixture work. Toilet services, bathroom plumbing, and kitchen plumbing address room-specific fixture needs.
When adding fixtures to an existing home — such as adding a bathroom, installing a utility sink in the garage, or adding a wet bar — Bonded Plumbworks performs the DFU calculations to verify that existing drain and vent piping can handle the additional load. If the existing system is undersized, pipe upgrades are included in the project scope to maintain code compliance.
ASME A112.19, NSF/ANSI 61 & EPA WaterSense Standards
ASME A112.19 series governs the manufacture and performance of plumbing fixtures across all categories. The applicable state building codes specifies minimum fixture counts for residential occupancies, ADA accessibility requirements, and DFU values for sizing calculations. NSF/ANSI 61 certifies that fixture materials in contact with potable water are safe. EPA WaterSense sets efficiency standards for toilets, faucets, and showerheads.
Kohler, American Standard, Moen & Elkay Fixture Manufacturers
Kohler, American Standard, and TOTO manufacture complete lines of residential plumbing fixtures. Moen and Delta lead in faucet and showerhead manufacturing. Elkay and Blanco specialize in kitchen sinks. Sloan and Zurn dominate commercial fixture markets.
