ProPress is a brand name by Viega that has become the industry shorthand for press-connect copper pipe joining, a flameless method that uses a hydraulic pressing tool to permanently compress a copper fitting with an integrated O-ring seal onto standard copper tube. ProPress connections replace traditional soldered (sweated) joints with a mechanical press that takes 4 to 7 seconds per connection, eliminates open-flame fire risk, and produces reliable joints rated to 200 PSI.

EPDM O-Ring Compression, Permanent Deformation & 4–7 Second Cycle

The ProPress system was introduced to the North American market by Viega in the early 2000s and fundamentally changed how professional plumbers approach copper pipe installation. Before press technology, every copper joint required cleaning, fluxing, heating with a torch, and applying solder — a process that takes 2 to 5 minutes per joint and introduces fire risk near combustible building materials.

The ProPress connection process is streamlined. The plumber cuts the copper tube square, removes burrs from the cut end, marks the insertion depth on the tube, slides the fitting onto the tube to the marked depth, and applies the pressing tool. The tool’s jaws enclose the fitting and activate, compressing the fitting body approximately 0.030 inches onto the tube in a controlled, uniform squeeze. This compression permanently deforms both the fitting and the tube together while compressing the EPDM O-ring into a seal groove, creating a joint rated for the full service life of the copper system.

ProPress connections are permanent — they cannot be disassembled without cutting. If a joint needs to be remade, the plumber cuts out the fitting and installs a new one. The O-ring material (EPDM for water, HNBR for gas) determines the service rating of the connection. Mixing O-ring types is not permitted.

ProPress Copper, MegaPress Steel, Gas-Rated & XL Large-Bore Types

ProPress for copper is the original system, compatible with Type K, L, and M copper tube from 1/2 inch to 4 inches. It is the most widely used press system in residential and commercial plumbing.

MegaPress is Viega’s extension of the press concept to carbon steel and stainless steel pipe, using the same pressing tool with different jaw profiles. MegaPress is used for gas, fire sprinkler, and hydronic systems.

ProPress for gas uses fittings with a yellow identification dot and HNBR sealing elements rated for natural gas and propane. Gas-rated fittings are not interchangeable with water-rated fittings.

ProPress XL covers larger pipe sizes (2.5 to 4 inches) with XL-size jaw sets for the pressing tool. These larger fittings are common in commercial riser and main distribution piping.

Repiping, Water Heater Connections & Emergency Leak Repair Services

Bonded Plumbworks uses ProPress technology extensively for copper pipe installations, repairs, and modifications. During repiping projects, ProPress significantly reduces installation time compared to traditional soldering, which translates to less disruption for the homeowner. For water heater replacements, ProPress connections at the copper supply and distribution lines eliminate the need for open flame near the water heater and surrounding cabinetry.

ProPress is especially valuable for emergency leak repairs where a failed copper joint needs immediate replacement. Bonded Plumbworks’ technicians can cut out the damaged section, install a ProPress coupling, and restore water service in minutes rather than the extended time required for soldering in wet conditions, which is technically unreliable.

ASME B16.51, ICC-ES ESR-1856 & NSF/ANSI 61 Code Compliance

Viega ProPress fittings are certified to ASME B16.51 and carry ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-1856 confirming compliance with the International Plumbing Code, International Mechanical Code, and Uniform Plumbing Code. The applicable state building codes accepts press-connect copper fittings for potable water and gas installations when listed by an approved testing agency. NSF/ANSI 61 certification is required for potable water applications. All ProPress fittings must be pressed with calibrated Viega-approved pressing tools.

Viega, RIDGID, Milwaukee Tool & Novopress Pressing Equipment

Viega is the originator and primary manufacturer of the ProPress system. RIDGID manufactures the RP 350 and RP 241 pressing tools compatible with ProPress jaws. Milwaukee Tool produces the M18 FORCE LOGIC Press Tool. Novopress offers the ACO 203 compact pressing tool for tight-space applications.
