Purified water is water that has been processed through reverse osmosis, distillation, or deionization to reduce total dissolved solids below 10 parts per million, removing virtually all minerals, chemicals, and contaminants from the source water. Purified water production in residential plumbing most commonly uses point-of-use reverse osmosis systems installed under the kitchen sink, providing treated drinking water through a dedicated faucet separate from the standard tap.

RO Membrane Stages, First Flush Diverter & TDS Performance Testing

Purified water production through reverse osmosis forces tap water across a semipermeable membrane with pores small enough to block dissolved salts, heavy metals, and organic compounds while allowing water molecules to pass. A residential RO system typically includes a sediment pre-filter to protect the membrane, an activated carbon pre-filter to remove chlorine that would damage the membrane material, the RO membrane itself, and a carbon post-filter for final taste polishing.

Standard RO systems produce a waste stream of 3 to 4 gallons of reject water for every gallon of purified water. Installing a permeate pump reduces this ratio to near 1:1 by using the energy of the reject water to assist membrane pressure, eliminating the need for additional electricity while cutting water waste by 75 percent.

TDS measurement with an inexpensive meter provides a quick performance check on any purified water system. Municipal tap water typically reads 150 to 400 PPM. A properly functioning RO membrane produces water under 30 PPM. When the TDS reading climbs above 50 PPM, the membrane has reached the end of its service life and needs replacement, typically every 2 to 3 years depending on source water quality.

Under-Sink, Tankless, Whole-House & Countertop RO System Types

Under-sink reverse osmosis systems are the most common residential purified water installation, producing 50 to 100 gallons per day through a pressurized storage tank and dedicated dispensing faucet. Systems from APEC Water Systems and iSpring range from $150 to $500 installed.

Tankless reverse osmosis systems eliminate the storage tank and produce purified water on demand at higher flow rates. These units prevent potential bacterial growth that can occur in stagnant tank water.

Whole-house reverse osmosis systems treat all water entering the home, costing $1,500 to $4,000 installed, and are typically paired with a remineralization filter to add calcium and magnesium back into the water for pipe protection and taste.

Under-Sink RO Installation, Well Pre-Treatment & Kitchen Integration

Purified water system installation is part of Bonded Plumbworks’ water treatment and filtration services. Under-sink RO installations require a cold water supply connection, a drain saddle for the reject water line, and a dedicated faucet hole in the countertop or sink deck.

For homes with well water containing elevated iron, sulfur, or TDS levels, Bonded Plumbworks’ technicians recommend whole-house pre-treatment before the RO system to extend membrane life. When kitchen plumbing renovations include a new sink, Bonded Plumbworks pre-plumbs for a dedicated RO faucet so homeowners can add a purified water system without future cabinet modifications.

NSF/ANSI 58, NSF/ANSI 42 & EPA PFAS Contaminant Standards

NSF/ANSI 58 is the performance standard for point-of-use reverse osmosis systems, certifying contaminant reduction claims including lead, arsenic, chromium, and fluoride. NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic effects like chlorine taste and odor reduction. The 2024 EPA PFAS regulation established federal limits of 4 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS, driving demand for NSF 58-certified RO systems that effectively remove these persistent contaminants.

APEC, iSpring & Pentair Everpure RO Systems

APEC Water Systems produces the ROES-50 and Essence series of under-sink RO systems with WQA Gold Seal certification for contaminant reduction verified by independent testing. iSpring manufactures 5-stage through 7-stage residential RO systems with transparent filter housings that allow visual inspection of filter condition. Pentair’s Everpure line provides commercial-grade purified water systems used in restaurants and medical facilities where consistent water quality is critical.
