Tankless water heater descaling is a preventive maintenance procedure that circulates a food-grade acid solution — typically white vinegar or commercial descaling agent — through the heat exchanger of a tankless water heater to dissolve mineral scale deposits that accumulate from hard water. Descaling restores heating efficiency, maintains full flow rate, and extends the service life of the heat exchanger, which is the most expensive component in a tankless unit.

Heat Exchanger Scale Formation, Efficiency Loss & Recirculation Process

Tankless water heaters heat water on demand by passing it through a compact heat exchanger consisting of narrow copper or stainless steel tubing with fins. When hard water (water with elevated calcium and magnesium content) passes through this exchanger at high temperatures, dissolved minerals precipitate out and adhere to the interior tube surfaces as scale — a hard, chalky deposit that insulates the heat transfer surface and restricts water flow.

Many service areas have hard to very hard water, with calcium carbonate levels typically ranging from 150 to 300 parts per million. At these levels, scale accumulation in a tankless heat exchanger can reduce efficiency by 10 to 25 percent within 12 to 18 months without maintenance. Severe scaling can trigger the unit’s high-temperature safety limit, causing error codes and shutdowns.

The descaling process involves closing the unit’s isolation valves, connecting a small submersible pump to the service valve ports, and circulating 3 to 4 gallons of descaling solution through the heat exchanger in a closed loop for 45 to 60 minutes. The acid dissolves the calcium and magnesium scale, and the spent solution is flushed from the system with fresh water. The process requires no disassembly of the unit and takes approximately 90 minutes including setup and cleanup.

Vinegar, Commercial Acid, Flush Kit & Professional Descaling Methods

Vinegar descaling uses undiluted white distilled vinegar (5 percent acetic acid) as the descaling agent. Vinegar is safe, non-toxic, food-grade, and effective on moderate scale buildup. Most tankless manufacturers recommend vinegar as the standard descaling agent.

Commercial descaling solutions use stronger acid formulations (typically citric acid or phosphoric acid) for heavy scale buildup. Products like Flow-Aide and Calci-Free dissolve scale faster than vinegar and are recommended for severely scaled units or very hard water conditions.

Flush kit method uses a purpose-built descaling kit that includes a submersible pump, bucket, hoses, and connection fittings. The kit connects to the service valve ports built into the unit’s isolation valves for easy recirculation.

Professional descaling combines chemical descaling with a full system inspection, including cleaning the inlet filter screen, checking the combustion air intake, verifying gas pressure, and testing temperature rise across the exchanger. Professional service catches developing problems before they cause failure.

Annual Maintenance, Filter Inspection & Water Softener Integration Services

Annual descaling is the single most important maintenance task for tankless water heater longevity. Bonded Plumbworks provides tankless water heater descaling as part of water heater maintenance services. During each descaling visit, Bonded Plumbworks’ technicians also inspect the inlet filter, verify gas pressure, check the condensate drain (on condensing models), and test the temperature differential to confirm the heat exchanger is performing to specification.

For homes with particularly hard water, Bonded Plumbworks may recommend descaling every 6 months rather than annually, or the installation of a water softening system to reduce scale formation at the source. Pairing a water softener with a tankless unit dramatically extends the interval between descaling services.

Navien, Rinnai, Noritz, and Rheem all specify annual descaling in their warranty maintenance requirements. Failure to descale as recommended can void the heat exchanger warranty, which is typically 10 to 15 years. The State building codes require that tankless water heater installations include isolation valves with service ports to enable descaling without disconnecting the unit. ANSI Z21.10.3 covers gas-fired tankless water heater safety and performance standards.

Rinnai EZ Connect, Flow-Aide, My PlumbingStuff & Navien Flush Kits

Rinnai manufactures the EZ Connect Maintenance Kit designed for DIY and professional descaling. Navien builds the NaviClean recirculation flush system into its NPE-2 series units. Flow-Aide produces a biodegradable descaling solution specifically formulated for tankless water heaters. My PlumbingStuff manufactures complete descaling kits with pump, bucket, and hoses. Bosch also manufactures solutions commonly specified for tankless water heater descaling applications.
