A bathtub is a plumbing fixture designed to hold water for bathing, typically installed in a bathroom and connected to hot and cold water supply lines and a drain-waste-vent system. Standard residential bathtubs hold 25 to 45 gallons of water and are manufactured from acrylic, fiberglass, porcelain-enameled steel, or cast iron, with each material offering different durability, weight, and heat-retention characteristics.

Supply Lines, Drain Assembly & Structural Load Requirements

The bathtub connects to three plumbing systems simultaneously. Supply lines deliver hot and cold water through a mixing valve or two-handle faucet assembly. The drain system removes used water through a drain fitting in the tub floor, connected through a P-trap to the building’s drain-waste-vent system. An overflow fitting near the top of the tub prevents water from spilling onto the floor by routing excess water directly to the drain.

Bathtub drain assemblies use either a trip-lever mechanism or a lift-and-turn stopper to control water retention. Trip-lever assemblies operate a hidden plunger inside the overflow tube, while lift-and-turn or push-pull stoppers sit directly in the drain opening. Both types require periodic maintenance to clear hair and debris that accumulate around the stopper mechanism.

The weight of a filled bathtub creates significant structural demands. A standard 40-gallon tub filled with water and an adult occupant places approximately 450 to 500 pounds on the floor framing. Cast iron tubs can weigh 300 to 400 pounds empty, adding to the total load. Proper subfloor support is essential during installation to prevent sagging, cracking, or water damage from a stressed floor system.

Alcove, Freestanding, Drop-In, Soaking & Whirlpool Types

Alcove bathtubs fit between three walls and are the most common residential type. They use a built-in apron on the front side and are typically combined with a showerhead to serve double duty.

Freestanding bathtubs are not attached to walls and sit independently on the bathroom floor. Clawfoot tubs and modern sculpted designs fall into this category. They require floor-mounted or wall-mounted supply connections and a specialized drain rough-in.

Drop-in bathtubs are set into a framed surround or deck, with the rim resting on the surrounding structure. These allow custom tile or stone surrounds and are popular in primary bathroom remodels.

Soaking tubs are deeper than standard models, typically 20 to 24 inches of water depth compared to 14 to 16 inches for a standard tub. Japanese-style soaking tubs (ofuro) can reach 27 inches. The increased volume requires verification that the water heater can supply adequate hot water.

Whirlpool and air-jet bathtubs include motorized jet systems that circulate water or air for therapeutic massage. These require electrical connections, dedicated circuits, and access panels for motor maintenance.

Installation, Drain Repair & Bathroom Plumbing Services

Bathtub installation and replacement is a core service within Bonded Plumbworks’ bathroom plumbing offering. Whether replacing an aging alcove tub, installing a freestanding soaking tub, or converting a tub-shower combination to a walk-in shower, the project involves supply line connections, drain rough-in modifications, and overflow assembly installation.

Common bathtub plumbing repairs include slow-draining tubs caused by hair and soap buildup, leaking drain assemblies, failed overflow gaskets, and malfunctioning diverter valves that fail to redirect water from the tub spout to the showerhead. Bonded Plumbworks’ drain cleaning technicians resolve these issues using mechanical snaking and drain camera inspection.

ASME A112.19.1, ASME A112.19.4 & ASSE 1016 Requirements

ASME A112.19.1 establishes dimensional and performance standards for enameled cast iron bathtubs. ASME A112.19.4 covers porcelain-enameled steel fixtures. The State building codes require anti-scald protection (ASSE 1016) on all bathtub supply valves, with a maximum delivered water temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Kohler, American Standard & TOTO Bathtub Lines

Kohler manufactures the Underscore, Archer, and Villager bathtub lines. American Standard produces the Princeton and Cambridge series. TOTO offers the Nexus and Clayton freestanding models. Sterling (Kohler subsidiary) provides value-oriented alcove tubs for builder-grade installations.
