Compression fittings are mechanical pipe connections that create a watertight seal by compressing a ferrule (also called an olive or compression ring) between a nut and the fitting body as the nut is tightened, deforming the ferrule around the pipe’s outer surface without soldering, gluing, or special tools. Compression fittings are widely used in residential plumbing for fixture supply connections, shut-off valves, ice maker lines, and other small-diameter applications where a removable, reusable connection is desirable.

Ferrule, Nut & Fitting Body: Three-Component Sealing Mechanism

A compression fitting consists of three components: the fitting body with a threaded port, a compression nut, and a ferrule. The pipe inserts through the nut and ferrule into the fitting body. As the nut threads onto the body, it drives the ferrule forward and inward, compressing it against the pipe’s outer wall and the fitting body’s tapered seat. This compression creates a mechanical seal that is tight enough to withstand residential water pressure.

Compression fittings require no heat, flame, or chemical solvents, making them suitable for confined spaces, retrofit work, and situations where open-flame soldering is prohibited. They work on copper, brass, and some plastic tubing, with the ferrule material matched to the pipe material for proper deformation and seal integrity.

The most common residential application for compression fittings is the connection between fixture supply tubes (the chrome or braided lines under sinks and toilets) and the angle stop or shut-off valve. These connections must be tight enough to prevent leaks but accessible enough for future maintenance or fixture replacement.

Brass, Chrome-Plated, Plastic & Flare Fitting Configurations

Brass compression fittings are the standard for potable water connections. The fitting body, nut, and ferrule are all brass, providing corrosion resistance and compatibility with copper tubing.

Chrome-plated compression fittings are functionally identical to brass but have a polished chrome finish for exposed installations under wall-hung sinks and pedestal lavatories.

Plastic compression fittings use nylon or acetal components for applications such as ice maker supply lines, water filter connections, and irrigation systems where lower pressures are involved.

Flare fittings are a related compression-style connection where the pipe end is flared outward at a 45-degree angle and compressed against a matching cone in the fitting body. Flare fittings are primarily used for gas line connections rather than water supply.

Supply Tube Connections, Shut-Off Valves & Fixture Services

Compression fitting installation and repair are routine tasks in residential plumbing service. Bonded Plumbworks provides faucet and fixture services that include supply tube connections, shut-off valve installation, and compression fitting replacement when leaks develop at aging connections.

A leaking compression fitting is often caused by an over-tightened nut that has deformed the ferrule beyond its sealing capacity, a misaligned pipe that creates uneven compression, or a damaged ferrule. Bonded Plumbworks’ technicians diagnose the cause and either repack the fitting or replace it. For bathroom plumbing and kitchen plumbing renovations, compression fittings provide accessible connections that simplify future fixture upgrades.

ASME A112.18.1, NSF/ANSI 61 & ASTM A254 Standards

Compression fittings for potable water must comply with ASME A112.18.1/CSA B125.1 when used as part of a faucet assembly, and they must meet NSF/ANSI 61 for materials in contact with drinking water. The State building codes require all supply connections to be accessible for maintenance and repair, which compression fittings inherently provide. ASTM A254 covers the material specifications for brass compression fittings.

BrassCraft, Watts, Dahl & John Guest Product Examples

BrassCraft manufactures a full line of brass compression fittings, supply tubes, and angle stops for residential fixture connections. Watts produces compression stop valves and transition fittings for copper-to-supply tube connections. Dahl manufactures mini-ball compression valves with quarter-turn operation. John Guest produces push-fit fittings that use an internal compression mechanism requiring no tools.
