Crimp fittings are a PEX pipe connection method that uses a copper crimp ring compressed over the PEX tubing and a barbed insert fitting by a calibrated crimp tool to create a permanent, leak-proof joint. Crimp fittings are the most widely used PEX connection system in residential plumbing, favored for their low material cost, fast installation speed, and proven long-term reliability in hot and cold water supply systems.

Crimp Process, Go/No-Go Gauge Verification & 160 PSI Rating

The crimp connection process requires four components: PEX tubing, a barbed insert fitting (brass or poly-alloy), a copper crimp ring, and a crimp tool. The plumber slides the copper ring over the PEX tubing, inserts the barbed fitting fully into the tube bore, positions the ring approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch from the tube end over the fitting’s barb zone, and squeezes the crimp tool handles to compress the ring.

The crimp tool applies a calibrated compressive force that permanently deforms the copper ring, pressing the PEX tubing tightly against the barbs of the insert fitting. The ring’s compression creates a mechanical interlock between the tubing and fitting that withstands pressures well beyond the 160 PSI maximum operating pressure of residential PEX systems.

Each pipe size requires a matching crimp tool jaw or ring size. Standard residential sizes are 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, and 1 inch. After crimping, the joint is verified with a go/no-go gauge that checks the compressed ring diameter. An under-crimped ring fails the gauge and must be cut out and redone, while a properly crimped ring passes through the “go” end but not the “no-go” end.

Copper Rings, Brass Insert, Poly-Alloy & Lead-Free Brass Options

Copper crimp rings are the standard compression element, manufactured from annealed copper for consistent deformation. These are the most common and least expensive PEX connection hardware.

Brass insert fittings are the traditional barbed fitting material, offering durability and availability. Brass fittings are suitable for most water chemistry conditions but may dezincify in aggressive water.

Poly-alloy (PPSU) insert fittings are engineered plastic fittings that resist dezincification and provide a larger flow bore than brass fittings of the same nominal size, resulting in lower pressure drop across each connection.

Lead-free brass fittings comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act requirement for less than 0.25 percent weighted average lead content. All brass PEX fittings sold for potable water use must be lead-free.

Repiping Projects, Gauge-Verified Joints & PEX Installation Services

PEX crimp fitting installation is a core skill in modern residential plumbing and a primary component of whole-house repiping projects. Bonded Plumbworks provides pipe repair and repiping services that include PEX repiping using crimp, clamp, or expansion connections based on project requirements and site conditions.

For bathroom plumbing and kitchen plumbing renovations, PEX with crimp fittings offers faster installation and lower material cost compared to soldered copper. Bonded Plumbworks’ plumbers verify every crimp connection with a go/no-go gauge before closing walls, ensuring each joint meets manufacturer specifications. For water line services, crimp fittings provide reliable connections on main trunk lines and branch takeoffs throughout the home.

ASTM F1807, ASTM F2098 Gauge & NSF/ANSI 61 Certification

PEX crimp rings must comply with ASTM F1807 (Standard Specification for Metal Insert and Metal Insert and Plastic Insert Fittings Using Copper Crimp Rings for SDR9 PEX Tubing). The go/no-go gauge must meet ASTM F2098 standards. The applicable state building codes permits crimp fittings for PEX water supply connections and requires all components to carry NSF/ANSI 61 certification for potable water contact. Copper crimp rings must meet ASTM B813 for the copper material specification.

Watts, Apollo, Viega & SharkBite Crimp System Options

Watts manufactures brass and poly-alloy PEX crimp fittings with companion copper crimp rings. Apollo produces PEX-B crimp fittings and calibrated crimp tools. Viega offers crimp fittings with proprietary Smart Connect technology. SharkBite manufactures PEX crimp rings and go/no-go gauge kits for connection verification. Sioux Chief is another manufacturer whose products Bonded Plumbworks technicians install and service for crimp (PEX) fittings applications.
