Solvent cement fittings are plastic pipe connectors made from PVC, ABS, or CPVC that join to their corresponding pipe material using solvent cement — a chemical welding agent that dissolves the surface layers of both the fitting socket and the pipe end, fusing them into a single monolithic joint when the solvent evaporates. Solvent cement fittings are the standard joining method for plastic drain, waste, and vent (DWV) systems and CPVC water supply piping in residential construction.

Chemical Weld Process: Polymer Chain Entanglement & Cure Times

The solvent cement joining process creates a chemical weld, not a glued bond. When solvent cement is applied to the pipe exterior and fitting socket interior, the solvent (typically tetrahydrofuran, methyl ethyl ketone, or cyclohexanone) temporarily softens the plastic surfaces. As the pipe is inserted into the fitting and the solvent evaporates, the softened polymer chains from both surfaces intermingle and re-solidify into a single fused structure. A properly made solvent cement joint is stronger than the pipe wall itself.

Each plastic pipe material requires its own specific solvent cement formulation. PVC cement will not properly fuse ABS fittings, and ABS cement will not fuse PVC. CPVC requires CPVC-specific cement with solvents aggressive enough to soften the chlorinated material. Using the wrong cement is one of the most common causes of joint failure in plastic plumbing systems.

Primer is an additional requirement for PVC and CPVC joints. Primer is a preparatory solvent (typically containing acetone or MEK) that pre-softens the plastic surfaces before the cement is applied, ensuring deeper penetration and a stronger weld. The State building codes require the use of primer on all PVC and CPVC solvent cement joints. ABS does not require primer under most codes.

PVC DWV, PVC Pressure, CPVC, ABS & Transition Fitting Types

PVC DWV fittings are white fittings used for drain, waste, and vent systems in sizes from 1.5 to 6 inches. Available configurations include sanitary tees, wyes, elbows, couplings, cleanout adapters, and closet flanges.

PVC pressure fittings are Schedule 40 or Schedule 80 fittings rated for pressurized water supply service. They have deeper sockets and tighter tolerances than DWV fittings.

CPVC fittings are cream or light yellow fittings for hot and cold water supply piping. CPVC fittings use CTS (Copper Tube Size) dimensions, which differ from iron pipe size (IPS) used by PVC.

ABS fittings are black fittings used for DWV applications. ABS is common in western states and some local jurisdictions. ABS uses ABS-specific cement and does not require primer.

Transition fittings connect different plastic materials — typically PVC to ABS — using a specialty transition cement or a mechanical no-hub coupling. Direct solvent cementing of PVC to ABS is not permitted by code.

ASTM D2564, F493, D2235 & Purple Primer Code Requirements

ASTM D2564 covers solvent cements for PVC pipe and fittings. ASTM F493 covers solvent cements for CPVC pipe and fittings. ASTM D2235 covers solvent cements for ABS pipe and fittings. The State building codes require purple-tinted primer on all PVC and CPVC joints as a visual confirmation that primer was applied. All solvent cements must be listed by NSF, CSA, or IAPMO.
