Solvent cement is a chemical bonding agent used to join PVC, ABS, or CPVC plastic pipes and fittings by dissolving the surface layers of both components and fusing them into a permanent, monolithic weld as the solvent evaporates. Despite being commonly called “glue,” solvent cement does not create an adhesive bond — it creates a chemical weld where the polymer chains of the pipe and fitting intermingle and re-solidify, producing a joint stronger than the pipe material itself.

Solvent Attack, Polymer Chain Entanglement & Working Time Factors

Solvent cement works through a process of solvent attack and polymer chain entanglement. The active solvents — typically tetrahydrofuran (THF), methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), or cyclohexanone — penetrate the surface of the plastic, breaking apart the polymer chains and creating a semi-liquid layer on both mating surfaces. When the pipe is inserted into the fitting, these softened layers merge. As the solvent evaporates over the following minutes to hours, the intermingled polymer chains re-solidify into a single continuous structure.

The working time (open time) after applying cement before the surfaces begin to set varies by cement body type, ambient temperature, and pipe diameter. In hot climates, light-body cements may begin setting in as little as 5 seconds on small-diameter pipe. Heavy-body cements provide more working time for larger diameters that require more assembly effort. Cure time — the period before the joint can be pressurized — ranges from 15 minutes for small DWV joints at warm temperatures to 48 hours for large-diameter pressure joints at cold temperatures.

Proper joint preparation is essential. The pipe end must be cut square, deburred, and dry-fitted to verify insertion depth. Both surfaces must be clean and free of dirt, grease, and moisture. For PVC and CPVC, a primer is applied first to pre-soften the surfaces and ensure adequate cement penetration.

PVC, CPVC, ABS, Transition & Purple Primer Cement Types

PVC solvent cement is formulated specifically for PVC pipe and fittings. Available in light, medium, and heavy body formulations for different pipe sizes and conditions. Blue-tinted versions are available for easy visual inspection.

CPVC solvent cement contains more aggressive solvents to soften the chlorinated material. CPVC cement is typically orange or yellow and must not be used interchangeably with PVC cement.

ABS solvent cement is formulated for ABS pipe only. ABS joints typically do not require primer, though some jurisdictions mandate it. ABS cement is black or yellow.

All-purpose transition cement is formulated to bond PVC to ABS in transition joints where permitted by code. Not all jurisdictions accept chemical transitions between PVC and ABS.

Primer is a preparatory solvent applied before cement on PVC and CPVC joints. Purple-tinted primer is required by the applicable state building codes as visual proof of application. Clear primer exists but is not accepted in jurisdictions requiring visible inspection confirmation.

ASTM D2564, D2235, D2855 & NSF Listing Requirements

ASTM D2564 governs PVC solvent cement. ASTM F493 governs CPVC solvent cement. ASTM D2235 governs ABS solvent cement. The State building codes require purple primer on all PVC and CPVC joints. Cement and primer containers must bear the NSF, CSA, or IAPMO listing mark. Assembly procedures must follow ASTM D2855 (standard practice for making solvent-cemented joints with PVC pipe and fittings).
