A wrench is a hand tool designed to grip, turn, and tighten or loosen nuts, bolts, pipe fittings, and other fasteners by applying rotational torque. In plumbing, wrenches are essential for assembling and disassembling threaded pipe connections, fixture installations, valve replacements, and supply line hookups, with specialized plumbing wrenches engineered for the unique shapes and access constraints of piping systems.

Lever-Arm Torque, Over-Tightening Risk & Plumber’s Multi-Wrench Kit

Wrenches function by converting hand force into rotational torque through a lever arm. The longer the wrench handle, the greater the mechanical advantage and the more torque it can generate. Plumbing connections require precise torque application because under-tightening causes leaks while over-tightening can crack fittings, strip threads, or deform compression rings.

Professional plumbers carry a range of wrench types because plumbing systems present diverse fastener shapes, sizes, and access conditions. A pipe wrench grips round pipe, an adjustable wrench fits hex nuts, and a basin wrench reaches faucet mounting nuts in the confined space behind a sink. No single wrench design can address all plumbing applications, which is why a well-equipped plumber’s tool bag typically contains six or more wrench varieties.

The material composition of plumbing wrenches matters for durability and safety. Drop-forged steel wrenches resist the high torque loads required for frozen or corroded fittings. Chrome vanadium alloy provides strength with reduced weight. Aluminum wrenches are used where reduced weight is important, though they lack the torque capacity of steel.

Pipe, Adjustable, Basin, Strap & Torque Wrench Types

Pipe wrench is the iconic plumbing tool with serrated, adjustable jaws that grip round pipe and fittings. They are used in pairs, one wrench holding the pipe stationary while the other turns the fitting. Common sizes range from 10 to 24 inches.

Adjustable wrench (Crescent wrench) has smooth, parallel jaws that adjust to fit hex nuts and bolts of various sizes. It is used for supply line connections, valve packing nuts, and fixture mounting hardware.

Basin wrench has a pivoting jaw on a long shaft, designed specifically to reach faucet mounting nuts in the tight space between the sink bowl and the wall.

Strap wrench uses a nylon or rubber strap instead of metal jaws to grip round objects without scratching. It is used on chrome-finished pipes and polished fittings where pipe wrench teeth would cause cosmetic damage.

Torque wrench applies a precisely measured amount of rotational force, critical for gas line connections and engineered fittings that specify exact torque values.

Fixture Installation, Gas Line Work & Emergency Shutoff Valve Operation

Every plumbing service call requires wrench work. Bonded Plumbworks’ technicians use professional-grade wrenches during fixture installation, water heater services, gas line services, and virtually every other service category. Proper wrench selection and technique prevent fitting damage that leads to callbacks and leaks.

During emergency plumbing calls, the ability to rapidly isolate water flow depends on having the correct wrench to operate shut-off valves, which may be corroded, painted over, or seized from years of disuse.

ASME B107.8/B107.10, OSHA 1926.301 & State Plumbing Workmanship Standards

ASME B107.8 covers the safety requirements for adjustable wrenches. ASME B107.10 governs pipe wrench specifications. OSHA Standard 1926.301 requires that hand tools, including wrenches, be maintained in safe condition and used only for their designed purpose. The applicable state building codes does not specify tool requirements but does require that plumbing work be performed to workmanship standards that only proper tooling can achieve.

Ridgid Pipe, Channellock Adjustable, Klein Tools & Milwaukee Torque Wrenches

Ridgid manufactures the most widely recognized pipe wrenches in the plumbing industry, including the aluminum series for reduced weight. Channellock produces adjustable wrenches and pliers used by plumbers nationwide. Klein Tools and Knipex offer specialty plumbing wrenches and plier-wrenches. Milwaukee produces torque wrenches calibrated for gas fitting work.
