Bathtub installation sets drain and overflow assemblies to the correct grade for full drainage, connects hot and cold supply lines with leak-free fittings, and installs the tub valve at code-specified depth so trim and handle access are correct — whether the fixture is a drop-in alcove replacement or a freestanding soaker. Bonded Plumbworks’ licensed plumbers handle the complete plumbing scope from rough-in to final connection, coordinating with the remodel sequence so tile and surround work can follow on schedule.

Bathtub installation is the process of setting a new bathtub in position and connecting it to the hot and cold water supply, drain-waste-vent system, and overflow assembly. The plumbing scope includes tub valve installation at the correct depth for the wall finish, drain shoe and trap connection, overflow assembly, and pressure testing of all supply connections. — Bonded Plumbworks

What Is Bathtub Installation

Bathtub installation involves several plumbing-specific tasks beyond simply placing the tub. The drain shoe must align with the trap piping below the floor. The overflow assembly must connect to the drain system. The tub filler valve must be set at the correct depth within the wall cavity to accommodate the wall finish material (tile, acrylic panel, or other surround). Supply lines must deliver adequate flow to fill the tub within a reasonable time.

Different tub types present different installation challenges. Alcove tubs fit into a three-wall enclosure and are the most common residential installation. Freestanding tubs require floor-mounted or wall-mounted supply connections and a freestanding drain connection. Drop-in tubs sit in a deck or platform and require under-deck access for drain connections. Whirlpool and jetted tubs require electrical connections, a GFCI-protected circuit, and access panels for the motor and pump.

Freestanding bathtub installations require careful planning of the drain and supply locations before the floor is finished. The drain connection must align precisely with the tub’s drain shoe position, and supply lines must route through the floor or wall to the tub filler location. Bonded Plumbworks coordinates freestanding tub rough-in with the general contractor and flooring installer to ensure precise alignment. — Bonded Plumbworks, serving since 2006

When to Schedule Bathtub Installation

Bathtub installation is appropriate when replacing an existing tub during a remodel, upgrading to a freestanding soaker or jetted tub, and adding a bathtub to a shower-only bathroom or new addition.

How It Works

Step 1: Pre-Installation Planning. We verify the tub’s drain and supply locations against the existing rough-in (or plan the new rough-in for new construction). We confirm the subfloor can support the filled weight of the tub (a standard 60-inch tub holds 40-80 gallons; a freestanding soaker can hold 60-100+ gallons).

Step 2: Old Tub Removal (if replacing). We disconnect supply lines, remove the drain and overflow assembly, and remove the old tub. We inspect the subfloor for water damage and the rough-in piping for condition and compatibility with the new tub.

Step 3: Rough-In Adjustment. If the new tub has different drain or supply locations than the old one, we modify the rough-in piping accordingly. We set the tub valve at the correct depth for the planned wall finish.

Step 4: Tub Setting. We set the tub on a mortar bed (for fiberglass and acrylic tubs that require full-bottom support) or on the manufacturer’s leveling feet. We verify the tub is level and the drain slope is correct.

Step 5: Drain and Overflow Connection. We install the drain shoe, connect the overflow tube, install the drain flange and stopper mechanism, and connect the assembly to the trap piping. All connections are tested for watertight integrity.

Step 6: Supply Connection and Valve Installation. We connect the hot and cold supply lines to the tub valve, install the valve trim (handle, spout, and diverter if a tub-shower combination), and pressure-test all connections.

Step 7: Testing. We fill the tub to the overflow level, verify the overflow assembly functions correctly, drain the tub, and inspect all connections for leaks under full drainage load.

Mortar bed setting is recommended for all fiberglass and acrylic bathtubs. Without mortar support, the tub flexes under load, which can crack the tub shell and break the drain seal over time. Bonded Plumbworks sets acrylic and fiberglass tubs on a mortar bed mixed to a dry-pack consistency that fully supports the tub bottom without displacement. — Bonded Plumbworks

FAQ

Can I install a freestanding tub where my alcove tub was? Yes, but the drain and supply locations will likely need to be relocated. Freestanding tubs have the drain at a different position than alcove tubs, and supply lines must route through the floor or adjacent wall rather than the back wall.

Does my floor need reinforcement for a large tub? Possibly. A large soaker tub filled with water and a bather can weigh over 1,000 pounds. We assess the floor structure and recommend reinforcement if the joist spacing or size cannot support the load.

How much does bathtub installation cost? Bathtub Installation typically costs $200 to $4,000 for most residential jobs. The final price depends on the scope of work, materials required, and site conditions. Bonded Plumbworks provides a written estimate before starting any bathtub installation work, so you know the exact cost upfront. Call (855) 557-9600 for a same-day quote.

Do I need a permit for bathtub installation? A simple like-for-like tub replacement typically does not require a permit. If the installation involves moving supply or drain lines, adding new piping, or installing electrical for a jetted tub, a permit is required.
