Shower pan installation establishes the slope that directs water to the drain rather than standing at the perimeter, bonds the drain assembly to create a watertight connection at the point of highest leak risk, and applies the waterproofing membrane that prevents moisture from reaching the subfloor and building structure beneath. Bonded Plumbworks’ licensed plumbers construct or set the pan, set the drain body at the correct height for the finished floor, and flood-test the assembly before tile work begins.

A shower pan (also called a shower base or receptor) is the waterproof floor of a shower enclosure that contains water and directs it to the drain through a controlled slope. Shower pans are constructed from mortar bed with a waterproof membrane, pre-formed acrylic or fiberglass, solid surface materials, or tile-ready foam substrates. The pan must maintain a minimum slope of 1/4 inch per foot toward the drain and create a watertight connection at the drain assembly. — Bonded Plumbworks

What Is Shower Pan Installation

Shower pan installation creates the waterproof floor of the shower that prevents water from penetrating into the subfloor. There are several types of shower pans, each requiring different installation methods:

Mortar Bed with Membrane. The traditional method uses a sloped mortar bed over a waterproof membrane (PVC liner or liquid-applied membrane). The mortar is hand-packed to create the required slope, and the membrane wraps up the walls a minimum of 3 inches above the finished curb height.

Pre-Formed Acrylic or Fiberglass. Factory-molded pans with built-in slope and drain opening. These sit on a mortar bed for support and connect directly to the drain assembly. A mortar slurry bed under a prefab pan fills any voids between the pan and the subfloor, preventing flexing that causes stress cracks during shower pan installation.

Tile-Ready Foam. Pre-sloped foam substrates (such as Schluter KERDI-SHOWER-ST or Wedi) provide a lightweight, waterproof base that is ready for direct tile application. A monolithic pre-waterproofed pan combines the slope, waterproofing membrane, and substrate into a single factory-sealed unit, simplifying shower pan installation by eliminating the multi-layer membrane application.

Linear Drain Systems. Modern designs that use a long, narrow drain along one wall, requiring a single-plane slope across the entire shower floor. These are essential for curbless/barrier-free showers.

The connection between the shower pan and the drain assembly is the most leak-prone point in any shower. Bonded Plumbworks uses clamping drain assemblies that mechanically compress the waterproof membrane between the drain flange and the subfloor flange, creating a watertight seal that does not rely on adhesive alone. Every pan installation includes a flood test — filling the pan with water to the curb height for 24 hours — to verify the seal before tile is installed. — Bonded Plumbworks, serving since 2006

When to Schedule Shower Pan Installation

Shower pan installation is required for new custom tile showers, when a failed pan is leaking to the subfloor, and when a bathtub-to-shower conversion or curbless linear-drain shower is being built.

How It Works

Step 1: Subfloor Preparation. We verify the subfloor is structurally sound, level, and free of rot or damage. For slab-on-grade construction, we verify the drain location and rough-in height. Any subfloor damage from a previous pan failure is repaired before the new installation. Leveling compound (from brands like Ardex or Mapei) corrects minor subfloor irregularities that would compromise the shower pan installation slope accuracy.

Step 2: Drain Assembly. We install the drain assembly at the correct height relative to the planned finished floor, accounting for the mortar bed thickness, membrane, tile bed, and tile. An ABS or PVC 2-inch shower drain body connects the pan to the trap below, and proper cement bonding with pipe primer ensures a watertight joint that will not shift during the shower pan installation curing process.

Step 3: Pre-Slope (mortar bed method). We apply a sloped mortar bed beneath the membrane that directs any water that penetrates the tile layer to the weep holes in the drain assembly. This is the “belt and suspenders” waterproofing approach. A mortar sand mix (typically a 4:1 sand-to-cement ratio) forms the pre-slope, and a mortar bed float compacts and smooths the surface to achieve the precise 1/4-inch-per-foot gradient required for proper shower pan installation drainage.

Step 4: Waterproof Membrane. We install the primary waterproof membrane — PVC liner, liquid-applied membrane, or sheet membrane — over the pre-slope, wrapping it up the walls and over the curb. The membrane is clamped into the drain assembly to create a mechanical seal.

Step 5: Final Mortar Bed. We apply the top mortar bed at the code-required slope (1/4 inch per foot) over the membrane, creating the surface that will receive tile. A notched trowel applies the thinset adhesive at uniform depth when the shower pan installation uses tile-ready foam substrates, ensuring consistent bond strength across the entire pan surface. A chalk line, tape measure, and torpedo level verify slope accuracy and pan dimensions at every stage of the shower pan installation.

Step 6: Flood Test. We fill the completed pan with water to the curb height and leave it for a minimum of 24 hours. We mark the water level and check for any drop, which would indicate a membrane leak. The test must pass before any tile is installed.

Step 7: Tile Coordination. After passing the flood test, the pan is ready for tile installation. We coordinate with the tile contractor on drain grate selection and any final height adjustments.

A failed flood test must be diagnosed and repaired before proceeding. The most common failure points are the drain-to-membrane connection, membrane seams, and membrane penetrations at the curb. Bonded Plumbworks does not proceed with tile until the flood test passes — discovering a leak after tile is installed means demolishing the tile, pan, and starting over. — Bonded Plumbworks

FAQ

How long does a shower pan last? A properly installed mortar bed pan with PVC or sheet membrane typically lasts 20 to 30 years. Tile-ready foam systems are rated for the life of the installation. Pre-formed acrylic pans last 10 to 20 years depending on use and maintenance.

How do I know if my shower pan is leaking? Signs include water stains on the ceiling below the shower (second floor), musty odor near the shower base, loose tiles at the shower floor, and visible mold or mildew at the base of the shower walls.

How much does shower pan installation cost? Shower pan installation typically costs $1,000 - $2,500 for most residential jobs. The final price depends on the scope of work, materials required, and site conditions. Bonded Plumbworks provides a written estimate before any shower pan installation work begins, so you know the exact cost upfront with no surprises.

Can a leaking shower pan be repaired without demolition? In most cases, no. The waterproof membrane is beneath the mortar and tile. Repairing it requires removing the tile and mortar to access the membrane. Topical sealants are temporary and unreliable.

How does shower pan installation fit into a bathroom remodel plumbing project? Bathroom remodel plumbing coordinates the pan, drain, valve, and supply rough-in as a single scope of work. Scheduling the shower pan installation within the broader remodel ensures the drain height, valve depth, and membrane tie-ins align with the finished wall and floor materials.
